Understanding What Drives your Growth: The 6 Pillars of Revenue
How we Solve Presence, Targeting, and Creative
The 6 Pillars of Revenue Growth
For a business, building revenue is analogous to building friendships. You “earn” friendships just like you earn revenue. Revenue comes from six basic sources.
Let’s break down the Six Pillars of Revenue Friendship:
1. Presence Management
Back in the day, this was like being in the phone book, having an “Open” sign on, and a welcoming front door. Now, it’s about having listings, good reviews, and an active social media presence.

When it’s done wrong
“I never see him anymore. Not sure if he moved or something. Either way, he’s not available, so I have new friends.”

When it’s done right
“Love that guy. He’s always there for me.”
2. Marketing
This pillar of friendship is about knowing who you are and what types of friends you want to attract. It’s about identifying where they gather and spend time.

When it’s done wrong
“I don’t feel like I fit in anywhere. Who am I? Would anybody like me?” or “Everyone loves me! Everywhere. I’m awesome to the masses.”

When it’s done right
“I will meet great friends in Lincolnshire—specifically friends to whom I have something to offer. So, thirty-somethings, mostly men, who have discretionary income and enjoy adventure sports like kayaking and climbing. I’ve noticed they are mostly single and have professional careers.”
3. Advertising
This is the simplest part of the mix, yet it is unfairly blamed when revenue fails. Advertising is simply the vehicle that takes you to the party where your potential friends gather. It’s like an Uber, airplane, subway, or bike—but in the form of TV, radio, digital, print, email, etc. Advertising is all about going to the party (marketing is about picking the right party) and going often!

When it’s done wrong
“I’ve never heard of him. Nope, he’s never been here at our parties.” or “Yeah, I think I might have seen him once or twice, but I can’t remember his name. He hasn’t come around for a while, so nobody here really knows him.”

When it’s done right
“I totally know who you’re talking about. Seems like a good guy. I’ll know more after I get to know him.”
4. Branding
This is probably the most confusing of the pillars. Let’s make it simple. Branding happens after you identify your potential friends (marketing) and take your Uber to the party (advertising). Once you get there, you’d better be likable!

When it’s done wrong
“That dude’s a freak. Didn’t fit in here at all.” or “I didn’t notice him. Kind of a wallflower. Can’t really remember much about him.”

When it’s done right
“That guy is great! We’re tight, man. Friends for life—practically blood brothers. You should hang out with us sometime. He’s awesome.”
5. Sales
What happens when you pick the right party, go there often, and are well-liked—but there are MANY other friends to choose from? That’s where sales come in. A salesperson intercedes on your behalf and tells everyone why they should pick you as their friend.

When it’s done wrong
“That guy seemed pretty cool, but what was his friend saying about him? I didn’t get it.” or “How bad does that guy need a friend? Wow, that one guy kept pushing him on us. Looked pretty desperate.”

When it’s done right
“I’m so glad we met his friend. He’s so cool. That story about XYZ was awesome. I’m glad we’re going to hang out next week.”
6. Customer Service
This is super simple. Sometimes friends make mistakes, so they ask for forgiveness. They remember your birthday, call to say hello, and genuinely want you to be happy.

When it’s done wrong
“What the heck do I have to do to get his attention? You just don’t treat a friend that way.”

When it’s done right
“Nobody is perfect. But he’s so loyal, we’re friends for life.”
